The Peacock Gudgeon (Tateurndina ocellicauda), a peaceful and highly ornamental freshwater fish from the Eleotridae family, originates from the slow-moving streams and clear waters of Papua New Guinea. This species is admired for its stunning coloration, featuring a pearly white to bluish body covered with red, orange, and blue spots, and a distinctive black ocellus at the base of the tail, giving rise to its common name. Peacock Gudgeons thrive in water temperatures of 22–28°C, a pH range of 6.0–7.5, and soft to moderately hard water. They are omnivorous with a strong preference for meaty foods, readily accepting frozen and live foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms, and high-quality micro pellets. This species has an easy to moderate care level and is considered hardy, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquarists. Temperament is peaceful and non-aggressive, ideal for community aquariums with calm tank mates. Adults reach a maximum size of 6–7 cm (2.5–3 inches) and have a lifespan of 4–6 years under proper care. Peacock Gudgeons are cave spawners, laying eggs inside small caves or tubes, with the male guarding the eggs until hatching. A minimum tank size of 15–20 gallons is recommended, with a well-planted setup, driftwood, caves, and gentle filtration. Compatible species include small tetras, rasboras, Corydoras, and other peaceful fish. Males are more colorful with a slightly larger head and extended dorsal fin, while females are smaller and rounder.
